About Us

'Keep Whiteladies Local' is a collection of concerned yet positively inspired local residents, traders and interested individuals who aim to protect, revive and celebrate diversity in one of the most famous areas of Bristol; Whiteladies Rd, which over time has been invaded by international corporations, leading to a very drab and lifeless place.

We are a peaceful and pro-active group; working to help transform peoples shopping habits and general attitude towards consumerism.

The group was established in May 2011 in response to the announcement that Sainsburys was to be opening a second store on Whiteladies Rd, putting serious strain on the handful of remaining local, independent traders.

Corporate dominance of the high street has become a serious problem and we are doing our bit to challenge them in a key province. The high density of corporate chains not only threaten smaller independent stores, but by being present on the road they also detract from the areas identity. Diversity in the high street leads to a stronger sense of community, creating a much more enjoyable place to visit and experience for everyone.

Whiteladies Rd is falsely perceived to be a busy commercial area making it fantastically difficult to challenge corporate chains planning to move onto the road. However, we truly believe that through celebration of the independent stores and unification of a community we can achieve our goal. If the campaign is successful in its aim here, then it will be a benchmark for the rest of Bristol, if not the whole country to follow in the quest to save our high street.
